As snow and ice cause chaos across the country, national sight charity Action for Blind People is calling on people to spare a thought for their blind and visually impaired neighbours, who can often become completely isolated in bad weather.
The charity is asking the public to visit or telephone any blind or partially sighted people they know in their area and see if they need any help.
Colin Whitbourn, head of service development at Action for Blind People, said: "Snow can be a real pain and can cause inconvenience, but for some visually impaired people, it can mean total isolation.
"At Action for Blind People, we are urging everyone who has someone blind or partially sighted living nearby, to stop and take a moment to see if they need any help.
"It can be as simple as a telephone call to check if they are okay, a visit to the shops to top up food supplies or even just clearing pathways - offers of help at this time can be a lifeline.
"Getting around in the snow with a visual impairment can be dangerous with slippy roads and icy conditions, so we would advise anyone with a visual impairment who has been hit hard by snow, not to go out unless it is absolutely necessary.
"If people do need to venture out, we would recommend asking a neighbour or friend for help and in urgent cases phoning local GPs, NHS Direct or your local social service crisis team."
Action for Blind People aims to ensure blind and partially sighted people get practical support in all aspects of their lives.
