Anti-X Factor campaign raises thousands for Shelter

People who bought Rage Against the Machine's Killing in the Name were urged to donate to the charity

A campaign to keep The X Factor winner Joe McElderry off the Christmas number one spot has raised more than £80,000 for housing and homelessness charity Shelter.

The campaign ‘Rage Against the X Factor', which was started on social networking website Facebook, urged anti-X Factor music fans to buy Rage Against the Machine's 1992 song Killing in the Name.

Shelter supporters Tracy and Jon Morter set up a page on fundraising website JustGiving asking people who had supported the campaign to give a donation to the charity.

Killing in the Name was confirmed as the Christmas number one yesterday.

Tracy Morter said the campaign was started as a bit of fun. "Once we realised the impact of the campaign we thought it would be a waste not to make use of the attention to do some good for those in need," she said.

She said the pair chose Shelter as beneficiary of the campaign because the recession had made it harder for people to keep a roof over their heads.
